Leap of Faith – Mixed Media Frame

Hi fellow crafters and friends,

I am Ruchi extending a big warm hello and welcome to you all. I am extremely happy to be part of the new Little Birdie Crafts Design Team. Their concept and philosophy of make in India and empowering women by especially employing rural women always impressed me. It is indeed a great privilege to be associated with a company which is so socially responsible. My heartfelt thanks to Harish and Rashmi for making me a part of this.

It was indeed very exciting to receive a whole bunch of goodies from the Little Birdie. So many mediums, wonderful embellishments, and their flowers are just outstanding. As my natural inclination is more towards mixed media, I thought of altering an old frame.

One of the most exciting supply in the DT pack was the sculpture paste which I was so looking forward to working with. I had attended a course where I learnt how to make flowers with sculpture paste. Since then, I always wanted to use this product in different ways. Here, I have used it to give a peeled paint texture to my project.

STEP 1

I took the alterable frame and painted the same in shades of brown and yellow. Once dry, I coated it with Little Birdie One Step Crackle medium. Once the coat dried completely, I used sculpture paste on top of it and let it dry overnight.

Once the cracks appeared, it gave a very good peeled paint effect to the frame.

STEP 2

Further to this process, I created the background piece by stenciling it with some modelling paste and fiber paste. Also used a gauze to create another texture, where I dipped the gauze in the mixed media paste to give it some body. I used chalk paints to add color to the background.

STEP 3

After the background was done I decided to work on the focal points of my composition. As my thought process was to show my leap of faith. I included  keys and a frog (symbolic of Leap) in my composition. The heart shape was cut out from foam board and I pasted some embossed cardstock on it. I did some dry brushing with Marsh Green and Sky Blue chalk paints and then sealed it with gel medium. On top, I used some salsa red and before it dried, I wiped out the excess red color to reveal the texture and color below.

STEP 4

I have used black gesso to color other molded elements which are made of clay and wood. I have used Gel medium to stick all the pieces. It works perfectly with various materials like wood, MDF, glass, clay and metal. To colour it, I have used Little Birdie chalk paints, metallic paints and Color Splash. All details of color are given below.

I have tried to create many layers in my project and I am happy with the outcome. To give the rust effect I used orange Color Splash (multiple layers with drying in between). Here is the finished project…Do not miss the cute little frog in the middle!!!

Hope I have inspired you all to give the Sculpture Paste a try, not just for making flowers but for other mixed media projects too.

Thanks for stopping by and going through the post,

Cheers

Ruchi.

Hello! I am Denise. I am a South African and happy creator! I started scrapbooking a number of years ago, but only really started serious about 10 years ago. Paper crafting is a passion for me, because it is ever evolving with new papers, new tools and new crazes! So whether it’s layouts, cards, mini albums, tags or altered projects, I enjoy them all & would be happy to create any of these.
