Tattoo Style Painted Jean Jacket

One of my favorite activities is thrift store shopping with my daughters – we always love finding a diamond-in-the-rough and figuring out ways to transform it into something fresh and funky. Whether it’s furniture, home decor, or clothing, it’s so fun to create a one-of-a-kind piece out of old discarded junk. I think the minimal investment helps boost our creativity, too – after all, if it doesn’t turn out the way we expected, we’ve only got a few bucks in it. This boutique-style cropped jean jacket project features a rose inspired by vintage tattoo flash.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step One: Gather supplies and prepare your work area. When using any sort of fabric paint, always be sure to place a sheet of waxed paper underneath the layer of fabric you are working on to prevent damaging the rest of the garment or your work surface.

Step Two: Decide on the positioning of your rose and secure the stencil to the denim with masking tape.

Step Three: Apply fabric paint in colors of your choice, using a foam brush to place the paint on the denim without bleeding under the edges of the stencil. Carefully remove stencil and clean it with warm soapy water to remove excess paint.

Step Four: After paint has dried, use fabric pens to shade edges of leaves and petals.  Use a black fabric ink pen to outline rose petals and leaves and add swirly flourishes if desired. This step is important for the tattoo-like appearance.

Step Five: Decide on positioning of trims and crochet flowers and apply with fabric glue.

This stencil has different sized flowers, so you could add more to the sleeves or front pockets – the only limit is your imagination! Don’t be afraid to try your hand at wearable art.

Bohemian Flower Crown

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Summer of Love, and influence from the sixties and seventies is everywhere, from bohemian chic home decor to flower child styled fashions. Seventies themed parties are also a hot trend; it seems no matter where you look, the trends are reminiscent of flower children with a little added polish.  This Bohemian Style Flower Crown is no exception;  it’s loaded with stunning paper flowers and butterflies from Little Birdie Crafts, and makes a lovely summer accessory for photo shoots, parties, or festivals.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step 1: Gather your materials, and start with the headband.

Step 2: Carefully bend the metal prongs of the headband so that they are vertical, leaving a few on the sides in place so that the headband will still hold fast when worn.

Step 3: Using hot glue, adhere the felt strips to the front and back of the prongs. This will create a solid base for you to add embellishments in the next steps.

Step 4: Starting at the outside edges of the headband, begin gluing on leaves, then small flowers.

Step 5: Reserve a space in the center for the larger sized flowers. Adhere with hot glue.

Step 6. Fill in any exposed areas of the felt with leaves, as well. You may also wish to do this on the reverse side of the crown.

Step 7: Add in a few of these charming canvas butterflies. These can also be tinted in many ways, such as with alcohol inks, watercolors or even marker.

The finished crown is a beautiful piece with lots of fashionable impact. It’s perfect for wearing to music festivals, or get a group together and have a party! All the supplies you need to create beautiful flower crowns are available at Little Birdie Crafts.

Stay cool this summer, and remember to celebrate everything! – Christie
