‘Shine’ Layered Shabby Card

Hello dear Little Birdie Crafts fans! It’s Tracey here to share a layered shabby card featuring the gorgeous ‘Shabby Chic Bouquet’ paper collection and shabby chic flowers. Summer is coming to a close, so I thought I’d share one more summery project with beautiful flowers, lace, and lots of layers.

I’ve created a photo tutorial to share all the details of how I put this card together. Enjoy!

Photo Tutorial:

Step 1:

Cut a 5″x7″ base from white cardstock. From the gorgeous ‘Shabby Chic Bouquet’ collection cut a 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 piece from the dotted paper and the 4 1/2 by 5 1/2″ focal piece from the lace and floral patterned paper. Adhere them together so that the dotted and white papers frame the floral patterned paper.

I cut a piece of lace from my stash and adhered it to the left side leaving the ends frayed and shabby.

Step 2:

Pop out this doily shape and fussy cut this card from the 12″x12″ inch paper set. These will be used for layering.

Step 3:

Select pieces from the ‘Shabby Chic Bouquet’ ephemera pack for more layers.

Step 4:

Die cut a small doily from white cardstock, and leafy flourishes from watercolour paper. The doily will remain white, but the flourishes will be watercolored, so using watercolour paper for them will work best.

Step 5:

I wanted some ephemera pieces to add to the layers, so stamped these vintage images and cut them out.

Tip: When stamping the circle pieces I used blue distress Ink, which is water reactive. I spritzed them with water to give them more of a vintage distressed feel, then blotted with a paper towel. I accidentally “re-stamped” a portion of the circle back onto the image. I just adore the look and repeated it on the other round piece as well.

Step 6:

I used permanent black ink to stamp out this butterfly image from my stash and colored it with watercolor brush markers to coordinate with the other elements.

Step 7:

Select amazing Little Birdie flowers and foliage to use in the floral cluster. I’ve used the following flowers from the Shabby Chic collection: Bonita; Eva; Izabela; Micro Roses; Julita; along with: Song of the Sea Bouquet Flowers; Arctic Ice Micro Jewelled Florettes; Blue Camila Flowers; and Ocean Mist Serenade Flowers.

Step 8:

Use color mists to color the leafy flourishes and a length of rayon seam binding. I kept the seam binding scrunched up as it dried to achieve the crinkled effect.

Step 9:

Tie the ribbon into a double loop bow. It doesn’t matter if the ends are even since they will be mostly tucked into the layers.

Step 10:

Dry brush the foliage and larger blue flower with white gesso.

Step 11:

Adhere the gorgeous layers and floral cluster in place with silicone glue.

Step 12:

Mix Little Birdie Iced Slate Metal Microbeads into Matte Gel Medium to brush randomly across the larger flowers.

Shabby Fall Card

Hello dear Little Birdie Crafts fans! It’s Tracey back with a new project to inspire you. Fall is just around the corner. I’ve been seeing fall projects pop up on social media, so I just couldn’t resist pulling out Little Birdie’s gorgeous Woodland Stories paper and flowers with their beautiful fall colors to create a card.

I have created a photo tutorial to share all the details of how I put this card together. Enjoy!

Tips and Techniques:

Step 1:

Select papers from the ‘Woodland Stories’ collection 12×12″ set. Cut the border paper to 5×7″ and the focal paper to 4 5/8 by 6 5/8″

Step 2:

Use a foam applicator to lightly rub white gesso randomly over the background, just enough to add a shabby feel to the paper without completely covering over the design and lovely color. I used a paper towel to blend the gesso and remove any excess. I also sponged on a little white gesso around the edges of the paper that will frame the card.

Step 3:

Ink up the beautiful Little Birdie ‘Melody’ stamp with permanent back ink, then stamp it off onto a scrap of paper two or three times, so just a little ink remains (for 3rd generation stamping). Curve the stamp around your fingers to randomly stamp the music lines across the background, re-inking and stamping off excess ink as needed. Curving the stamp helps achieve the organic edges.

The stamping was still a little too dark, so I used the same foam applicator to lightly dab and rub white gesso over the stamping, again rubbing off any excess with a soft paper towel. Be sure to allow the ink to fully dry before applying the gesso. If you look closely, you can see that I didn’t wait, and there’s a smeared area in the top center section. But no worries as it ended up getting covered up. There’s always some way to hide those little mistakes.

I’ll be adding stenciling over this, so also brushed on a coat of clear gesso to help seal the paper and reduce warping.

Step 4:

Apply Mixed Media Paste to the right side through the Fleur-de-lis Trellis Stencil. Heat set or set aside to dry.

Step 5:

Select flowers and foliage in fall colors. Here, I’ve used the following flowers from the Woodland Stories collection: Heleen; Marina; Elvina; and Pearl Butterflies.

Step 6:

Cut out two tags from the image sheet in the Woodland Stories 12×12″ paper set.

Step 7:

Dry brush the flowers and tags with white gesso. On the tags use a foam applicator then, rub and blend with a soft paper towel as you apply the gesso.

Step 8:

Select gorgeous Little Birdie Crafts laser cut chipboard. Here I’m using: Playful Circles; Mesh (cut in half down the center); Celebrate Together (Enjoy); and Butterfly Floris. I just adore how the stenciling coordinates with the mesh piece!

Step 9:

Heat emboss all the pieces except the wings with aged bronze embossing powder. I also ended up dry brushing these pieces with a little white gesso.

Step 10:

Heat emboss the wings with dusk embossing powder, then add a layer of opaline, which is a translucent pearlescent powder.

Step 11:

Arrange and adhere the embellishments with the flowers curving around the Playful Circle Chipboard.

Step 12:

Mix white prills into Acrylic Matte Gel Medium and brush randomly across the larger flowers. I just wanted a little extra texture, so didn’t add too many.

Step 13:

Use Acrylic Matte Gel Medium to adhere Green Melody Metal Microbeads and white prills to fill in along the bottom of the cluster. Once the gel medium has had a chance to dry, go back and dry brush lightly over the green microbeads with white gesso.
