Hello dear Little Birdie Crafts fans! Spring is in the air and it’s Tracey here to share a floral wall hanging featuring the gorgeous ‘Celebrate Life’ collection and primed chipboard. I’ve added texture with stenciling, stamping, and twine. Be sure to scroll down through my Tips and Techniques section for close-ups and all the details.
Tips and Techniques
I used a 5×8″ page from a shaped chipboard album for the project base. You could also use a pre-cut MDF or wooden shape.
The first thing I did was to brush on a couple coats of white gesso. Once the gesso was dry, I applied Grainy texture paste with the beautiful Feathers Stencil. While the paste was still wet, I sprinkled it with green embossing powder (I had some excess embossing powder in a few random places and brushed it away with a fine tip paint brush.) then heat set.
Tip If you don’t have green embossing powder, you could allow the texture paste to dry, then lay the stencil back over the design and dry brush with green paint. Be sure to clean your stencil while the paint is still wet.
Spritz the background with water and brush Ocean Mist Color Splash across the feathers. Spritz on more water if needed to get the color to move across the feathers. You can use a paper towel to dab away excess mist that gets outside of the feathers, but don’t worry too much about that since our next step will cover that up.
Dry brush the background with white gesso. I applied gesso more heavily on the areas around the feathers where the blue mist seeped out and then also dry brushed lightly over the feathers to soften the color. I ended up covering up most of the embossed green color, so I dabbed them with a wet paper towel while the gesso was still wet to allow some of that lovely green to peek through. I suggest you do the dabbing as you work across the background so it doesn’t dry before you get to it. Heat set or set aside to dry.
Once dry, use permanent black ink to stamp randomly across the background with the Melody clear stamp or any music or script stamp you have in your stash. I used second generation stamping by inking up the stamp and then stamping onto a scrap paper first before stamping onto the background so you will get a lighter image. To get soft edges, hold the stamp in your hand (not on a stamp block) and curve the stamp around your fingers to avoid sharp edges.
Wrap around the center of the background shape randomly with cording or twine.
Heat emboss the leafy circle from the Flora Hoops Primed Chipboard Set with the same green embossing powder used on the feathers. Then rub the leaves with Rich Gold and Coper Blaze Metallic Wax to add shading. If you don’t have green embossing powder, you can use green metallic paint.
I heat embossed the word blessed from the primed chipboard ‘Think Positive’ set with aged teal then rubbed with Rich Gold Metallic Wax. Such a cool effect, but the color wasn’t right when I started putting everything together so I went back and added two more coats of baby blue embossing powder over top of the teal and the mottled blue effect of the two powders melting into each other is just gorgeous. It’s a perfect color to coordinate with the background and other elements.
Tip If something doesn’t work out like you expect, just brainstorm to figure out something that will work. Sometimes you get results that are unexpectedly much better than what you originally imagined.
Dry brush flowers, leaves, and pollen with White Gesso. I used these gorgeous flowers from the Celebrate Life Collection: Kimberley; Marisa; and Wendy along with Beaded Pollen and a couple random leaves left over from previous projects.
Fussy cut images from the Celebrate Life 12×12″ and 6×6″ paper collections. These will be used to tuck in around the floral cluster and behind the chipboard frame.
I just adore the shimmer from Tinted Metallic Paints and used them to color this darling bee that I molded with resin.
Arrange and adhere elements with Silicone Glue.
I added Deep Marine Metal Microbeads mixed with prills using Matte Soft Gel Medium to fill in some spaces around the cluster.
Tie a short length of crinkle ribbon through the hole in the top of the wall hanging.
