- Hello Little Birdie Crafts Fans! It’s Tracey here to share a decoupaged box loaded with gorgeous Little Birdie Flowers and fabulous mixed media products. This is my first decoupage project to share with you, and I adored working with Deco Magic. The gorgeous Little Birdie Decoupage Papers went on so easily without any bubbling and the finish is super smooth.
All the details can be found below in my tutorial.
Let’s get started!
Brush a wooden box with White Gesso. My box had a printed design on it, so it took several coats of gesso to cover it to make sure the design didn’t show through the delicate decoupage paper. If you are starting with a plain wood box, one coat should be enough. Set aside to dry or use a heat tool to dry.
Tear random sized and shaped pieces of Butterfly Chronicle and Joyful Wings Decoupage Paper and apply to the box using Matte Deco Magic. Brush an area of the box a little larger than the piece of paper you will be using with Deco Magic. Immediately lay the paper onto the wet area of the box, then brush the top of the paper with more Deco Magic. You can continue to work before drying. I completed a side of the box and then let it dry before continuing with another side. Be sure to let some of the papers wrap around the corners to give continuity. Because I planned to decorate the box with glittered butterflies on the sides and gorgeous Little Birdie Crafts Flowers and embellishments on the top, I selected primarily the text sections of the paper.
After all the paper had been applied and the entire box was dry, I brushed one more coat of Deco Magic across the entire box to give a nice smooth finish.
One the Deco Magic is dry, apply Mulberry Glaze Sparkle Paste using the Fanciful Butterflies Stencil. I applied a thin layer so that some of the script paper design would show through once dry. Each butterfly is stenciled individually. I used several sizes from the stencil and angled them in different directions, so they would appear to be fluttering across the box rather than being lined up in a row. Sparkle Paste is such a great product to add a touch of sparkle and shine without the mess of dry glitter.
***Tip*** The areas around the head and antenna seemed to lift up a little since I was using the stencil on an awkward surface, so I applied some repositionable tape runner under this area of the stencil so it would lay nice and flat against the box and keep the glittered butterfly edges nice and crisp.
Brush a Tropical Foliage Primed Chipboard with White Gesso.
Once dry, brush random areas of the piece with Crackle Paste and allow to dry. Randomly apply Golden Glaze Metallic Paint. Dry and then add shadows with Glazed Berries Tinted Metallic Paint that has been thinned just a little with water. The size of my box worked perfectly with this fabulous chipboard piece. If it’s not a good fit for you, you could use this technique on whatever chipboard design works for your box.
Brush the inside and outside of a Bottle Cap with White Gesso.
Dry and then brush randomly with Shimmer Sherbet and Glazed Berries Tinted Metallic Paint. I blended the colors on a scrap of plastic, and did not dry between colors.
Once the Bottle Cap is dry, apply a rather thick layer of Heavy Gel Medium across the bottom of the cap and fill with trinkets such as rhinestones, pearls, Mute Orchid and Mystique Rose Microbeads. Place the larger trinkets first, then fill in with the smaller items, and sprinkle the microbeads into any remaining area that needs filled in.
Dry, then lightly dry brush with white gesso. Dry again and lightly dry brush with Golden Glaze Metallic Paint.
Die cut leaves and berries from Premium White Card Stock. Use Distress Ink to color the leaves and berries.
***Tip*** When coloring small delicate pieces of paper, I run a strip of repositional tape over a scrap of paper and lay the pieces across the tape. This holds them in place nicely while I color them and are easy to move once I’m done.
I selected this chipboard title from my stash. I thought “Collect Beautiful Moments” would be a perfect title for a box to store special trinkets in. It started out bright white which didn’t quite work with the vintage style and colors of my box, so I thinned down some Golden Glaze and Glazed Berries Tinted Metallic Paint to create washes that would color the piece without obscuring the words. I applied the Golden Glaze first, heat set to dry, then randomly brushed on some of the Glazed Berries. If you don’t have chipboard sentiments, you can use permanent ink to stamp on heavy weight cardstock and then this same technique to glaze color onto your sentiment. Adhere the sentiment to the lid with Silicone Glue.
Apply the gorgeous Little Birdie Flowers, along with the bottle cap, chipboard, and leaves already prepared with Silicone Glue to the top of the box. Little Birdie Crafts flowers are from the Fairy Sparkle collection: Heleen, Pixie Rose, Zoey, Arcadia, Marina, Elvina, Calypso, and Pearl Butterflies.
