Stunning Floral Toy Wagon For Dolls

On a recent trip to Los Angeles, my family made a stop at the famed American Girl retail store. Like magic, my daughter was instantly enthralled with the vast displays of beautiful dolls. The clothing and accessories for the collection was seemingly endless, and we spent several hours browsing the flawless displays. Brightly colored bedrooms, furry pets, and even tiny dishes and pretend food were some of the many offerings. One of the items that caught my eye was a miniature doll wagon for the 14″ sized Wellie Wishers dolls. I knew I had a little toy wagon at home that might do well for an attempt at a DIY, and I am so pleased to share the process and the outcome with you!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Helena ¬†Handcrafted Flowers with Stem, Pink – 2 packages
  • Curly Rose¬†,Yellow – 2 packages
  • Leaves, Design 2 – 2 packages
  • Sturdy Wood Box with Wheels, or Small Toy Wagon, approximately 12″ x 8″
  • Four 12″ long 1/4″ Wood Dowels
  • Four Brightly Colored Striped Paper Straws
  • Four Mini Tulle Poms
  • Heavy Gauge Wrapped Floral Wire
  • Large Silk Flower
  • Hot Pink Lolita Pom Pom Trim
  • Yellow Peapod Pom Pom Trim
  • Gold Mini Ric Rac Trim
  • Decoupage Glue
  • Acrylic paint in a variety of bright colors
  • Fairy Dust Glitter in Pale Gold
  • Fast drying adhesive
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

Step 1: Remove the wheels from the wagon and reserve. Paint the wagon using acrylic paint. I gave this one a bit of aging with a vintage wash paint. Once dry, use decoupage glue to add the Leaves in a pattern you like, as shown.

Step 2: Paint the wheels. The centers of these ones were gilded with Fairy Dust Glitter in Pale Gold, set with Mod Podge. Then, the end of a paintbrush was used to dot on some whimsical details, and sealed with additional Mod Podge. Gold Ric Rac trim was added for extra design and sparkle. Replace the wheels on the wagon once dry.

Step 3: Glue the wood dowels into the corners of the wagon, as shown. Slide the paper straws over the dowels for instant decoration!

Step 4: Cut a length of the heavy floral wire so that it will extend diagonally from corner to corner, and post to post, in an “X”. Add about 4″ of extra length so that you can create a curve. Attach and glue one end of the wire to a post, then create a cross section in the center, and glue to the opposite post, as shown.

Step 5. Attach a tulle pom to each corner to conceal the point where the wire was attached.

Step 6: Begin winding the Curly Roses onto the wire using their flexible stems, alternating with the Helena Roses so that you end up with a tightly packed alternating pattern. These flowers are absolutely stunning, and the colors are so vibrant!

Step 7: Add a large silk flower to the center of the cross section, concealing it, and also creating a miniature canopy for the wagon. Cover the top portion with pom poms or other decorative findings that you like.

Step 8: Add hot pink Lolita pom pom trim to all outside borders of the wagon as shown. Top with equal lengths of Peapod Pom Trim in a contrasting bright color. Add more Curly Yellow Roses to the centers of the leaves on the side panels.

Allow your project to dry overnight. The completed doll wagon is a spectacular sight and will appeal to girls of all ages!
