True Love Floral Mixed Media Card

Hello dear Little Birdie Crafts fans! It’s Tracey here to share a floral mixed media card featuring the ‘True Love’ paper collection and an assortment of gorgeous Little Birdie flowers. It’s my mom’s birthday later this month so I’ve created this for her, but with this sweet sentiment, it could be used for a variety of occasions. Be sure to scroll down through my Tips and Techniques section for close-ups and all the details.

Tips and Techniques

Select your focal paper from the True Love 6×6″ paper pack and trim to 5 5/8″.
Select another paper to place behind the focal paper to frame the card. (Not shown, but you can see it in the main photo.)

Brush the focal paper with a coat or two of clear gesso and dry.

Use white Mixed Media Paste with the fabulous Fleur-de-lis Trellis Stencil to create a diagonal design across the card and set aside to dry or use a heat tool.

Fussy cut gorgeous floral images from the Love and Roses 12×12″ paper pack. In the end, I only used two of these beauties.

Paint the Flora Hoops, Thriving Thistle, and Celebrate Primed Chipboard pieces with Wild Wasabi Chalk Paint from the Home Decor Set. I used two coats of paint.

Once dry, use Shimmering Sherbet Tinted Metallic Paint to add accents to the Flora Hoops and Thriving Thistles pieces and paint flowers from the Butterfly Flouris set.

I think shading always adds a nice touch, so I went in with a watercolor marker and accented with a darker shade of green that was similar in value to the Wild Wasabi.

I also found some green rhinestones in my stash to add some bling to the flowers. They were not the perfect shade of green, so I altered them by brushing with alcohol ink to get just the right color.

I dry brushed these gorgeous flowers with white gesso to add visual texture and soften them just a bit. I like using a fan brush for this. You can also dry brush after you have put your project together, but I think it’s easier to do before gluing everything down. I have used the following amazing Little Birdie Crafts Flowers: Love and Roses Collection – Celestina and Nora; Shabby Chic Collection – Queenie; and Celebrate Life Collection – Wendy. I adore that I can mix and match flowers from several collections so seamlessly to create such a beautiful arrangement.

Most of us have bits of lace in our stash that can help give beautiful texture to the background. I fussy cut the center from this lace to give it more interest.

Now that I had all my embellishments ready to go, I adhered the focal paper onto the larger background paper to create a frame, then arranged everything and adhered with glue and gel medium. I was so thrilled that the chipboard sentiment fit perfectly on the little fussy cut bench.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to rethink your design if it isn’t working. At first I had my floral cluster on the left side of the card, but the flowers and chipboard got a little lost with the stenciled background and I was covering up too much of the lovely Fleur-de-lis design. Once I moved the cluster over to the right side, it all came together so much better.

To finish things off I added some bling around the cluster with Glass Bead Gel as the base. I sprinkled on some Mystique Rose Metal Microbeads, a few craft pellets, and some chunky glass glitter. Once dry, I went back in with a fine tip paint brush and added some Wild Wasabi Chalk Paint to the Craft Pellets. I adore how the Craft Pellets take color so well.
